Bumper Crop!
111 tons is 30% over what the pessimistic pater familias predicted and 20% over last year’s record harvest. Talking with Jenaro it seems that the reason for the huge surge in crop size is that we lost very little to mildew this year and some of the poorer performing vines on the Northern slope pushed out nice sized crops.
But the size of the harvest this year is still remarkable because we had to replant nearly an acre of vines this spring (around 900) due to “vine decline” (we are pretty sure it was due to high water tables in certain areas that drowned roots).
Everything I’ve read and heard has lead me to believe this will be an average to slightly below average year after the huge harvest last year. Another huge crop is probably not what the industry needs at this point, and certainly not for varieties already in surplus supply.
I don’t believe we’re indicative of a larger trend, but I suppose we’ll find out in a few weeks.
